The Golden State Warriors are expected to make forward Jonathan Kuminga available in the trade market on January 15, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer on The Stein Line.
The 22-year-old’s new two-year, $48.5 million deal includes a team option for the final year and a clause requiring him to waive his right to block trades this season.
Fischer reports that the Warriors have been firm in their demands during contract talks, emphasizing control over Kuminga’s future. The prolonged negotiations have reportedly strained the relationship between the player and the organization.
Multiple teams remain interested in Kuminga, Fischer notes, including Chicago, Sacramento, and Phoenix. The forward’s potential trade value will likely be tested before the February 5 trade deadline.
Kuminga, who signed the deal this offseason, addressed the media following the agreement. “It’s part of what we do. It’s a business. At the end of the day, it all matters, we got it done, and I’m excited to be here,” he said.
The forward stressed team success over personal gain. “Me betting on myself is helping us win a championship. That’s our goal and how we’re all looking at it,” Kuminga explained. He also confirmed that staying long-term with the Warriors remains his objective.
Reflecting on the restricted free agency process, Kuminga said he gained valuable insights. “I just learned more about me, hearing from different people. It was a good experience,” he stated, highlighting the learning side of the negotiations.
On his role with the team, Kuminga expressed flexibility. “Find a way to impact—if it’s defense, guarding our best player, or scoring. That’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said. His comments indicate readiness to contribute in various capacities for the Warriors.
Kuminga also mentioned building chemistry with new teammate Jimmy Butler, which he sees as key to early-season success. “It’s very easy and simple to play with Jimmy. Having him here from day one will help us figure things out in training camp,” he noted.
As the season begins, the Warriors’ handling of Kuminga’s trade eligibility will be a storyline to monitor. Fischer emphasizes that if Kuminga struggles to establish a consistent role under coach Steve Kerr, his name will likely dominate trade-season speculation.
