Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain says meditation has been essential in keeping him balanced both on and off the court.
“I encourage all you guys to start meditating. I found that in like middle school, early high school — exactly like that,” McCain said, via HoopsHype. “It keeps me grounded. It keeps me really just happy. I feel joy everywhere I go.”
Selected 16th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCain signed a four-year deal with the Sixers on July 4, 2024.
McCain quickly made his mark, recording a career-high 34 points and 10 assists in a November 13 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for November 2024, becoming the first Sixers player to earn the honor since Ben Simmons in 2018.
Injuries have slowed his momentum, with a meniscus tear in his left knee ending his 2024–25 season. On October 1, the Sixers announced McCain underwent surgery to repair a UCL tear in his right thumb and would miss at least a month.
Despite setbacks, McCain maintains a positive mindset, attributing his resilience to daily meditation. “Anytime I feel anxious, I feel upset, I feel sad, angry — all the emotions — when I’m able to ground myself and meditate, it’s the most important thing in my life,” he said.
During his rookie season, McCain averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game over 23 appearances. His shooting accuracy stood at 46% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range.
McCain’s approach extends beyond physical preparation, focusing on mental clarity and emotional control. “Everybody goes through every emotion. And when I’m able to ground myself and meditate, I truly believe it got me to where I’m at,” he said.
