New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns reflected on a key early career lesson about money during his rookie years in Minnesota.

Towns recalled being in his third NBA season when he noticed a first-year player earning more than him on a team salary board. “I looked up, and I’ll never forget — I was like, ‘Never count anyone’s pockets.’ I’m just blessed to have what I’ve got,” he said on Boardroom, via HoopsHype.

The lesson, Towns explained, helped him focus on personal growth rather than comparing salaries. “Tibs started laughing. And it wasn’t a laugh like he agreed with me. It was a laugh like, ‘You’re learning something new today,’” he added.

Drafted first overall in 2015, Towns has built a career defined by consistency and all-around production. In the 2024–25 season with the Knicks, he averaged 24.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game over 18 playoff appearances.

Towns emphasized that his motivation in the NBA has never been financial. “I came to the NBA with nothing. I had nothing but love. And that’s all I ever felt was the currency I needed to succeed,” he said.

After signing his most recent deal worth over $49 million for the 2024–25 season, Towns still prioritizes character and integrity over wealth. “From there, I wanted to continue to build my soul. Continue to keep my integrity. Continue to be who I am,” he explained.

Over his career, Towns has earned approximately $233 million in NBA salary, including contracts with the Timberwolves and Knicks, yet he insists that personal fulfillment and love for the game remain central to his journey.

The five-time All-Star added that maintaining perspective has helped him navigate both success and challenges. “As much as people want to make me not be who I am — for their entertainment or consideration — I’ve continued to stay who I was,” Towns said.

Karl-Anthony Towns, who was born in Edison, New Jersey, lived in Minnesota from 2015 until 2024 before moving closer to his home by joining the Knicks ahead of the 2024-25 season.
