Dubai Basketball began its historic first season in the EuroLeague with a statement victory over Partizan.
The win was impressive not only because it came against one of Europe’s most respected clubs, but also because it was achieved without the services of Serbian national team standout Aleksa Avramovic.
Avramovic, who previously played for both Partizan and CSKA Moscow, had been sidelined with a heel injury he picked up while representing Serbia at EuroBasket.
Initially, there was optimism that his recovery would be short and that he would return to action early in the season. However, fresh reports suggest the situation has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.
Arena Sport commentator Edin Avdic, speaking on his podcast Udvajanje, revealed that Avramovic has now suffered a separate, more serious setback.
“Aleksa faces a break of eight to twelve weeks due to a knee injury. According to the information I have, he was injured by the physiotherapist, which is quite a bizarre situation,” Avdic explained.
“He previously had a heel injury, and this is a new injury from a few days ago. From what I know, the physiotherapist, during some stretching, apparently pulled his leg too much. You can’t believe something like this happens, but here we are … He’s looking at a two-month break because of it. As far as I know, it involves the knee ligaments.”
At this point, there has been no official confirmation from the club regarding the seriousness of the knee problem or the circumstances surrounding it.
Still, if Avdić’s account proves accurate, Avramovic could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. That absence would represent a significant early-season blow for Dubai, especially as they look to build momentum following their successful EuroLeague debut.
Avramovic’s importance cannot be overstated. Known as one of the premier defenders in international basketball, he was named Best Defensive Player at the Paris Olympics, where Serbia earned the bronze medal.
Beyond his defensive reputation, he has also shown his scoring and playmaking value. Last season, he helped lead CSKA Moscow to the VTB League championship, averaging 12.8 points and 3.4 assists per contest.
