Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg earned high praise from veteran Klay Thompson during the team’s Summer League practices. “Cooper did great,” Thompson said, via Mike Curtis of Dallas Morning News, highlighting that Flagg participated in every drill regardless of missed shots or mistakes.
Jason Kidd echoed the sentiment, noting Flagg’s basketball IQ and competitiveness. “He made a lot of the right plays. Handling the ball, playing without the ball at 18 years old… I thought his energy was great,” Kidd said.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, joined the Mavericks after a record-setting freshman season at Duke. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 37 games, earning both ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.
His collegiate career included a 42-point performance against Notre Dame, setting new freshman scoring records for Duke and the ACC. He also became the first ACC player in 25 years with over 500 points, 100 assists, and 30 blocks in a single regular season.
Flagg’s Summer League debut showcased his versatility, averaging 20.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in two games. His consistent effort and willingness to compete impressed teammates and coaches alike.
Thompson emphasized that Flagg’s commitment in practice is what sets him apart. “I’m most impressed he did not sit out one drill. I don’t care how many shots he misses, how many mistakes he makes. The fact that he’s in there and he’s competing every single drill, that’s what impresses me,” the sharpshooter said.
Flagg’s arrival comes as the Mavericks aim to adjust following the departure of Luka Doncic. His skill set is expected to complement veterans like Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and D’Angelo Russell.
The Mavericks are optimistic Flagg will make an immediate impact in the 2025–26 season. Head coach Jason Kidd has emphasized the young forward’s readiness to contribute on both ends of the court.
