Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard addressed fans and media during 2025 Media Day, confirming he does not plan to play this season.

Sean Highkin reported Lillard saying, “I don’t plan on it. I feel like if this team is a 1 seed [without me], they probably got it. I’m trying to be as healthy as possible.”

Lillard, 35, tore his Achilles on April 27 during the playoffs while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks against Indiana. The injury ended his season and led to the Bucks waiving him, leaving $103 million remaining on his contract.

In July, Lillard signed a three-year, $42 million deal to return to Portland, the team where he spent his first 11 seasons and became the franchise’s face.

During Media Day, Lillard emphasized caution in his rehabilitation, noting advice from trainers and other players with Achilles injuries. “Don’t try to be the guy who does it ‘in record time.’ There’s a lot you have to work through. It usually takes a little bit longer,” he said.

Despite the setback, Lillard remains focused on returning fully healthy. Speaking with iShowSpeed, he said, “Probably start of next season… That Achilles, you can’t f––k around with that.”

Last season, Lillard averaged 24.9 points and 7.1 assists with Milwaukee, maintaining his status as one of the league’s elite scorers. He also led the NBA with 32.2 points per game just two years ago.

While Portland will proceed without him in 2025-26, Lillard’s presence is expected to remain a key influence in the locker room, mentoring younger players and guiding the team’s development.
