Former New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau attended Friday’s Phoenix Suns practice alongside Alabama coach Nate Oats, sources told the Arizona Republic. Thibodeau, who was let go by New York in June after five seasons, observed the session to provide guidance to the team’s new head coach, Jordan Ott.

Ott, in his first year leading the Suns, welcomed Thibodeau’s presence, calling him a “brilliant mind” and noting the value of having experienced basketball voices in the building. The rookie head coach said both Thibodeau and Oats offered honest feedback that could help shape the team’s approach for the 2025–26 season.

Thibodeau, 67, led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and earned a Coach of the Year Award in 20221 during his tenure. Despite those accomplishments, New York opted for a coaching change, hiring Mike Brown as his replacement. His visit to Phoenix does not appear to be tied to a formal coaching role at this time.

The Suns enter the 2025–26 season with major roster and coaching changes following a disappointing previous campaign. Jordan Ott replaced Mike Budenholzer, who was fired after just one season despite a five-year, $50 million contract. The team also reshaped its front office, naming Brian Gregory as general manager and adjusting coaching responsibilities across multiple staff members.

Phoenix added several key pieces this offseason, including Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and rookies Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming, and Koby Brea, while moving on from Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. Ott’s staff now includes a combination of veteran assistants and player development specialists, with Thibodeau’s visit serving as an additional resource for building team culture and strategy.

While Thibodeau has no known direct ties to the Suns roster, his long-standing NBA experience is expected to offer valuable perspective on defensive schemes and player management. Ott indicated that the feedback from Thibodeau and Oats will be integrated into daily practices and game preparation.
