Ben Wallace reflected on the Pistons’ championship legacy, asserting that the team’s 2004 title might never have happened if they had chosen Carmelo Anthony over Darko Milicic in the 2003 NBA Draft.

Wallace explained that drafting Anthony could have disrupted team chemistry.

“Melo would have wanted to play right away. It would have had the potential to disrupt the team chemistry,” he said.

Instead, selecting Milicic proved pivotal. Wallace noted that Darko’s willingness to accept his role helped the team develop.

“By drafting Darko Milicic, he was a guy that came in and said, ‘I can’t play on this team. I’m not ready to play on this team. Who am I going to play in front of? I’m not ready.’ By him doing that and accepting his role, it allowed us to build, grow and get stronger,” Wallace explained.

He emphasized how this decision allowed other players, like Tayshaun Prince, to flourish.

“If we would have drafted Melo, Tayshaun Prince would have never blossomed and be the type of player that he became. We won a championship off the back of the best block that I have ever seen in my life,” Wallace said, referring to Prince’s iconic rejection of Reggie Miller in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

“And I blocked a lot of shots. That’s that type of grit and grind our team was.”
