The decision of the Spanish Basketball Federation on the new head coach is now officially released.

Former Real Madrid head coach Chus Mateo has been named as the new head tactician of the Spanish national team.

Mateo’s coaching term is effective until 2029 as per the contract of four years.

The Euroleague champion tactician officially acquired the position of Sergio Scariolo, becoming the next team’s head coach, also implementing a new basketball program to the national team.

Scariolo leaves Spain with an honorable exit behind a great legacy, making Spain one of the dominating countries in the world for two tenures, 2009-2012 and 2015-2025. He could not be forgotten as his legacy lives on by having four titles in EuroBasket, a World Cup gold medal, Olympic silver and bronze medals.

He also ended a history-making tenure with a first-round exit after a 2-3 run in Limassol’s Group C and 17th place in the final standings.

Meanwhile, the new head coach also has experience since 1991 with Real Madrid. He started as an assistant at the U16 Spain national team between 1993 and 1997. In 2014, he came back to Madrid with the same role under Laso.

Mateo was relieved from his duties following the 2024-2025 season after obtaining the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague title in 2023. He also acquired the Alexander Gomelsky EuroLeague Coach of the Year award in the same season.
