The Brooklyn Nets are preparing to integrate a historic influx of young talent after selecting five first-round players – Egor Demin, Nolan Traoré, Drake Powell, Ben Saraf, and Danny Wolf – reports Brian Lewis of The New York Post.
“This is great. It was a unique opportunity for us, to be quite frank,” said GM Sean Marks. “We’ve never had five picks in one draft…we see these young men fitting into our group and into our roster. So, it was about us capitalizing on the hand we were dealt.”
Demin, a 6’9″ guard from BYU taken eighth overall, impressed in Summer League with his shooting, though his play-making was limited by the presence of multiple lead guards.
Traoré, Powell, Saraf, and Wolf may see limited minutes or spend time with the G League affiliate in Long Island.
“The preseason with the team, getting to know everyone … is huge,” Traoré said. “As a point guard, it’s important to know these guys and just start to build the team right way.”
With additions like 2023 first-round pick Kobe Bufkin and other young players, the Nets could surpass the 2022/23 Rockets as the youngest NBA team ever.
“That’s definitely on me. Player development is going to be important,” said second-year coach Jordi Fernandez.
“The coaching staff has done a great job making our guys work, and those guys have improved. And we believe (the rookies) will do the same thing.”
This youthful core offers promise but also presents the challenge of blending five first-round rookies into a competitive team.
