According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, multiple reports have suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers are prioritizing salary-cap flexibility for the summer of 2027.

However, GM Rob Pelinka indicated that the team’s plans could shift if the right opportunity arises.

The Lakers are facing several critical financial decisions in the near future, with Rui Hachimura ($18.3 million), Gabe Vincent ($11.5 million), and Maxi Kleber ($11 million) all holding expiring contracts.

Additionally, Austin Reaves is expected to enter free agency after declining a four-year, $89 million extension in June.

Sources told McMenamin that the Lakers would be open to trading for a contract that extends beyond 2026 if it aligns with their team-building strategy.

Pelinka emphasized the importance of flexibility in roster construction, saying, “In terms of team building, we’ve talked about the importance of having optionality and when I use that word, it’s not to say in the future. I think optionality is also in the now.”

This suggests that while the Lakers are planning with an eye on the long-term, they remain willing to make moves in the present if the right deal presents itself, balancing both immediate and future priorities for the roster.
