With Jayson Tatum expected to miss the entire season due to his Achilles injury, Derrick White is being counted on to assume a much larger offensive role than he has traditionally carried in Boston.
Chris Forsberg, along with the NBC Sports Boston staff, discussed what they hope to see from White this season, emphasizing not only an increase in his scoring output but also the possibility of achieving his first 20-point-per-game campaign and earning his first All-Star selection.
Forsberg noted that in games where Tatum was absent last season, White still managed to average 20.8 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per contest, demonstrating his ability to step up when needed.
However, he also highlighted that the player has occasionally struggled with cold shooting streaks, which will be more difficult for the Celtics to navigate now that Tatum will not be available to shoulder part of the offensive load.
This season, White’s consistency and ability to lead the team effectively will be crucial as Boston aims to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference despite the absence of its star forward.
