Kevin Durant’s decision to join the Houston Rockets this offseason ended long-standing speculation about a possible move to Miami. Former Heat guard Mario Chalmers believes that was never a realistic option because of the shadow left by LeBron James.
Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on Scoop B Selects, Chalmers said Durant would not choose Miami under the weight of that legacy. “I don’t think KD ever goes to the Heat just because of the LeBron legacy,” Chalmers said.
Chalmers, who won two championships alongside James in Miami, explained that Durant would need to secure multiple titles elsewhere before even considering the Heat. “He’s gotta win two or more championships before he goes to the Heat so, I don’t think that pressure’s warranted at this age or at this time,” he added.
Durant, 36, was traded to Houston on July 6, 2025, in a seven-team deal that was the largest in NBA history. The Rockets acquired the veteran forward after the Phoenix Suns missed the 2025 postseason, finishing 11th in the Western Conference.
During his final season in Phoenix, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 62 games. Despite those numbers, a late-season ankle injury ended his year early and derailed the Suns’ playoff hopes.
The move to Houston gave the Rockets a marquee scorer to pair with their young core, while also signaling the end of Miami’s pursuit. The Heat, who had been monitoring Durant for years, never got close to securing the 15-time All-Star.
James’ four seasons in Miami remain the defining chapter of the franchise’s modern era. James delivered two championships, four Finals appearances, and cemented the Heat’s place in NBA history.
Chalmers believes that association makes Miami a difficult landing spot for Durant. For a player who has faced constant comparisons to James, joining the same franchise could create unnecessary pressure late in his career.
Durant’s legacy already includes two championships, two Finals MVPs, and over 30,000 career points. But according to Chalmers, adding Miami to his résumé would always carry James’ shadow.
