The New York Knicks are planning to bring in free agent guard Garrison Mathews on a training camp deal, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.

Bondy notes that Mathews will have the opportunity to compete for a place on the Knicks’ standard roster. Because he has already logged six NBA seasons, the 28-year-old is ineligible to sign a two-way contract.

This move comes on the heels of New York re-signing Landry Shamet to a one-year deal.

With both Shamet and Mathews known for their perimeter shooting, they may be in direct competition for one of the final roster spots – unless the Knicks make additional trades to clear space and ease their financial restrictions.

Mathews has carved out a reputation as a floor spacer. Nearly 85% of his career field goal attempts have been launched from three-point range, where he has converted at a steady 38.2% clip.

In addition to his long-range accuracy, the former Lipscomb standout has a knack for drawing fouls on three-point attempts, an underrated but valuable skill.

Set to turn 29 next month, Mathews has spent the last two-plus seasons with the Atlanta Hawks.

In the 2023/24 campaign, he appeared in 47 games, averaging 7.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 17.7 minutes per game while hitting 39.0% of his shots from deep.

If he can replicate that production in camp, Mathews could give New York another dependable shooting option on the wing as the team looks to solidify its depth heading into the season.
