NBA Commissioner Adam Silver discussed ongoing plans for a Europe-based professional basketball league, highlighting growing interest from both players and officials. He stressed that discussions with European stakeholders and NBA figures, including Jayson Tatum, continue this summer.
Silver noted Tony Parker’s positive remarks about the potential league, signaling strong support from European basketball leaders. He emphasized that while planning is underway, there are significant challenges to address before any league launch.
The commissioner clarified there is “no new news” on domestic expansion, countering speculation that Europe is being prioritized over U.S.-based growth. He framed the European initiative as a long-term commercial and competitive opportunity rather than immediate expansion.
The proposed NBA Europe league would operate separately from existing franchises but maintain the NBA brand. Silver previously highlighted the continent’s basketball talent and strong fan interest, pointing to sellouts during the Paris Olympics and the success of European MVPs as evidence of market potential.
Earlier talks in Geneva involved FIBA, EuroLeague clubs, and NBA executives, covering logistics such as national team windows, calendar conflicts, and player regulations. These discussions are described as constructive, though some EuroLeague teams expressed concerns over participation fees.
Silver compared the European model to the Basketball Africa League, suggesting a combination of permanent teams and qualifiers. This structure aims to integrate top talent while accommodating local leagues and schedules.
NBA Europe is positioned as a strategic step in global expansion, leveraging the NBA’s commercial strength and FIBA’s support for calendar alignment. Silver indicated the league could launch as early as the 2026–27 season if plans progress smoothly.
The commissioner emphasized that nothing about the process is easy, signaling a careful approach to implementation. NBA officials remain focused on both European opportunities and U.S.-based league growth in tandem.
