Luka Doncic has made it clear that Slovenia is not participating in EuroBasket 2025 just to compete.
Speaking to Eurohoops, the Lakers star said the team is aiming for the podium despite many doubting their chances. “We’re hoping for the medal. We think we can win a medal. I know a lot of others don’t, but we believe in us. Everybody that’s here, we all believe, everyone in everyone. So, just with head forward.”
Slovenia finished the group stage with a 3–2 record in Group D, securing third place behind France and host nation Poland. The squad overcame Belgium, Iceland, and Israel, while dropping games to Poland and France.
Doncic has been the driving force for the national team, averaging 32.4 points, 8 rebounds, and 8.4 assists across five contests. His efficiency rating of 35.4 is among the highest in the tournament’s opening phase.
He delivered standout performances against Poland and France, scoring 34 and 39 points respectively, though both games ended in losses. Against Israel, he recorded 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.
Through the group stage, Doncic has shot 44 percent overall and 59.2 percent from two-point range, while converting 88.1 percent of his free throws. His ability to generate offense and draw fouls has kept Slovenia competitive against stronger rosters.
Slovenia now moves to the knockout round as the third seed from Group D. They will face Italy, the second seed from Group C, in the Round of 16 on September 7 in Riga.
Despite external skepticism, Doncic’s belief has resonated inside Slovenia’s locker room. The guard’s production and leadership remain central to their hopes of reaching the medal rounds.
