The NBA’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration has raised questions about potential salary cap circumvention involving the Los Angeles Clippers and team owner Steve Ballmer.

League spokesman Mike Bass confirmed the inquiry after journalist Pablo Torre revealed court documents tying Leonard to a $28 million arrangement with the now-bankrupt firm.

Aspiration reportedly received $50 million in funding from Ballmer, fueling speculation about whether the deal was linked to Leonard’s decision to join the Clippers in 2019. The organization denied any wrongdoing, calling suggestions of salary cap violations “absurd.”

Insider Sam Amick detailed the possible consequences if the NBA determines the arrangement broke league rules. “The player contract could be voided. Executives could be suspended for up to one year. And it says all team personnel,” Amick explained on Sactown Sports 1140, via HoopsHype.

He added that some within league circles even joked about the potential fallout. “I had one person sarcastically say to me, ‘Man, Steve’s going to win here because… you’re going to void Kawhi’s contract, get all kinds of salary cap room. The guy has barely played the last couple of years. Any fine you give Steve Ballmer is irrelevant because he’s such a wealthy man,’” Amick said.

Ballmer, one of the richest owners in professional sports, is viewed as a respected figure among NBA governors. Amick noted that his stature complicates the league’s approach: “He’s a net positive for the league and, relationship-wise, has a good rapport with Adam.”

Still, Amick stressed the importance of accountability. “This situation is exactly what Adam needs to cut out of the league right now,” he said. “You cannot have a second-apron luxury tax system… and then potentially allow deals like this that, if proven, are putting money in the pockets of star players on the side as a way to keep them in town.”

The Clippers insist Ballmer’s investment in Aspiration was tied to its environmental mission, not Leonard’s contract. They also emphasized that Aspiration’s endorsement of Leonard was negotiated independently.

Amick credited Torre for uncovering the financial connections in bankruptcy filings. “Pablo filing through Chapter 11 bankruptcy documents, and connecting dots between Kawhi’s arrangement with the team sponsor and Steve Ballmer’s relationship… That’s old-school sleuthing,” he said.

As the NBA review moves forward, the stakes remain high. If infractions are proven, penalties could reshape the Clippers’ roster and reputation while intensifying scrutiny on the league’s salary cap system.
