Dallas Mavericks forward PJ Washington is reportedly on track for a contract extension as the franchise looks to secure his future.
Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that “an extension for Washington is likely,” citing league sources. He noted that while Washington is no longer an automatic starter following Dallas’ draft lottery win and the selection of Cooper Flagg at No. 1, the forward has built strong value around the league.
Washington turned 27 on Saturday and remains in the final year of his three-year, $46.5 million deal. His age and production make him a candidate for a long-term commitment despite changes to the Mavericks’ rotation.
In his first full season with Dallas, Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists across 57 games. He shot 45.3 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from three, delivering some of the best efficiency numbers of his career.
He also logged heavy minutes in last year’s playoff run, starting all 22 games and contributing 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest. His floor spacing at the power forward spot proved crucial in Dallas’ postseason success.
Washington was acquired at the 2024 trade deadline from Charlotte and immediately carved out a consistent role in Jason Kidd’s lineup.
Around the league, rival executives have taken notice of Washington’s development. Stein reported that there is no shortage of admirers, which raises the possibility of competition for his services if Dallas does not finalize an extension.
Washington’s career averages include 13.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists across six NBA seasons. His ability to defend multiple positions and stretch the floor has been consistent since entering the league as the 12th overall pick in 2019.
