Cason Wallace poised to improve Thunder scoring efficiency

Bringing back a roster that closely mirrors last season’s championship squad, the Oklahoma City Thunder are banking on internal growth from their young core rather than major roster changes.

Among the players expected to take a meaningful step forward is 21-year-old guard Cason Wallace, now entering his third NBA season.

As noted by Rylan Stiles of Sports Illustrated, Wallace has the potential to evolve into a more consistent and efficient offensive threat, complementing his already established defensive reputation.

Wallace’s defensive ability has never been in question – his elite on-ball pressure and versatility made him a steady part of Mark Daigneault’s rotation throughout his first two years.

However, his shooting stroke, once a major strength, regressed in his sophomore season. After an impressive rookie campaign in which he shot 49.1% from the field and an elite 41.9% from three-point range, those marks dipped to 47.4% overall and just 35.6% from deep last year.

The most glaring drop came from the corners, traditionally one of the most valuable spots for role players, where his accuracy fell by roughly 10 percentage points.

Even with that decline, Wallace showcased his adaptability by finding alternative ways to score.

According to Stiles, he ranked in the 81st percentile as a cutter, averaging 1.463 points per possession, and proved effective as a pick-and-roll option in guard-to-guard screening actions, producing 1.222 points per possession.

These numbers highlight his ability to contribute offensively even when the jumper wasn’t falling, making him a multifaceted threat within the Thunder’s system.

Stiles argues that Wallace is simply too skilled and too disciplined for his shooting slump to become a long-term concern. With his mechanics intact and his defensive value already cemented, there’s every reason to expect a bounce-back year.

If Wallace regains his perimeter efficiency while continuing to impact the game in multiple ways, he could emerge as a pivotal piece in Oklahoma City’s quest to defend their title.
