The New Orleans Pelicans have appointed Joe Barrer as the new head coach of their G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron.
NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that Barrer, who served as an assistant with Birmingham last season, will now take over the program. Before joining the Squadron, he held the head coaching job with the Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic’s G League affiliate, for two seasons.
The move marks an important step for the Pelicans’ development system as they prepare for the 2025–26 NBA season, their 24th year in the league. With a roster that features recent first-round draft pick Jeremiah Fears and second-year guard Jordan Hawkins, the franchise continues to emphasize player growth through its affiliate team.
Barrer brings familiarity with Birmingham’s culture and has a track record of working with young talent. His previous stint with Lakeland included managing rotations for prospects who later carved out NBA roles, giving him a reputation as a developmental-focused coach.
The Pelicans’ G League squad will be a critical part of the upcoming season, especially as several players on the main roster, including Hunter Dickinson and Trey Alexander, are on two-way contracts. Barrer will oversee their minutes and ensure they stay ready for call-ups.
The promotion comes at a time when New Orleans has reshaped its roster with additions from the 2025 NBA Draft. The team selected Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears at No. 7 and later acquired Derik Queen in a trade with Atlanta.
Barrer’s leadership in Birmingham will give the organization a platform to test lineups and player roles before they translate to the NBA level.
