Latvia’s superstar Kristaps Porzingis offered a candid perspective on the unique atmosphere of EuroBasket, drawing comparisons to the NBA and explaining why this tournament feels unlike anything else.
Porzingis acknowledged what most fans and reporters expect to hear when discussing the event:
“I know the answer everyone expects is ‘the intensity is insane.’ It is, don’t get me wrong. But also so are the NBA Finals or the NBA playoffs,” he said.
In other words, while EuroBasket is known for its do-or-die spirit, Porzingis emphasized that high-level basketball in general – especially the NBA postseason – demands a similar edge.
What separates EuroBasket, he explained, is the compact nature of the competition, where teams cannot afford any lapse in focus.
“Obviously, the regular season is a bit different. It [the EuroBasket] is probably more similar to the EuroLeague. Where every game is life and death. But that’s not to say that other games don’t have the same intensity.”
That “life and death” description underlines the harsh reality of EuroBasket: one bad game can shift the trajectory of an entire nation’s campaign. Unlike an 82-game NBA season or even a best-of-seven playoff series, the margin for error here is razor thin.
Porzingis also highlighted the joy that comes with playing in such a high-stakes environment:
“It is fun to play in that kind of environment. Every possession matters. And this is why it’s so fun for us as players and the fans.”
For the players, the pressure is also part of the thrill – it heightens every moment, turning even routine plays into decisive ones. For fans, this means constant drama, where games often swing on a handful of possessions.
With five games squeezed into just eight days during the Group Stage, the challenge is both physical and mental. Only the top four teams advance, making every matchup vital.
Porzingis admitted that there’s no secret formula to prepare for the grind:
“You do what you usually do. You don’t do anything crazy because it’s so short and intense tournament. You get to the best shape you can. And then just go out there and leaving everything. There’s no place to better do it than in home.”
