The San Antonio Spurs are elevating Scott King from their G League affiliate to the NBA bench. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that King has been promoted to assistant coach after winning G League Coach of the Year with the Austin Spurs.
Under King, Austin posted the top defensive rating in the G League at 102.3 and achieved the largest victory margin in league history at +23.5. His defensive schemes and player development focus stood out as major factors behind the team’s dominance.
This move comes as San Antonio transitions into a new era following Gregg Popovich’s retirement in May after 29 seasons. Mitch Johnson, who served as acting head coach for most of last season, was officially promoted to lead the team.
King now joins a staff that already includes Brett Brown, Matthew Nielsen, Mike Noyes, and associate head coach Sean Sweeney. His addition strengthens a coaching group tasked with molding one of the youngest cores in the NBA.
The Spurs have invested heavily in player development, drafting Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick and Carter Bryant at No. 14 in the 2025 NBA Draft. They also added Kam Jones at No. 38 to build around Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, the last two Rookie of the Year winners.
San Antonio’s roster also features De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes, Kelly Olynyk, and Devin Vassell, giving the team a balance of veterans and rising prospects. King’s track record in maximizing young talent fits with the franchise’s long-term vision.
