The San Antonio Spurs are adding player development specialist Tim Martin to their coaching staff. NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported the hiring on Tuesday.

Martin has worked closely with several NBA stars, including Victor Wembanyama, Tyrese Maxey, and Trae Young. His training background made him a sought-after figure for organizations looking to strengthen player growth and development.

For San Antonio, the move continues a summer of transition. Gregg Popovich stepped down on May 2 after 29 seasons, marking the first time since 1996 that the franchise enters a season without his coaching presence. Mitch Johnson, previously acting head coach, was officially promoted to lead the team.

The Spurs are positioning themselves around a young core highlighted by 2023 Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and 2024 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. They added more talent in the 2025 NBA Draft by selecting Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick and Carter Bryant at No. 14.

Martin’s addition aligns with the organization’s focus on player development. His experience working with elite young players could be critical as the Spurs try to mold Harper and Bryant into long-term contributors alongside Wembanyama and Castle.
