Patrick Beverley called Marcus Smart “the sleeper of this whole pickup” and predicted a big season for the guard. Beverley made the comments on The Pat Bev podcast after watching Smart’s late-season play and post-trade form.
“Marcus Smart has something to prove. It’s different, right? You talk about Marcus Smart dealing with injury. Yeah, he got Defensive Player of the Year. Is he the same player? Is he gonna defend it like that?” Beverley said, via Lakers Daily.
The veteran point guard pointed to Smart’s recent stretch with Washington as evidence the veteran can still impact games.
Beverley noted Smart’s motivation to earn a new contract and return to peak form. “That’s not something to dismiss,” Beverley added, saying that motivation can drive on-court intensity and focus.
Smart averaged solid numbers in limited stints after the trade deadline and showed improved outside shooting. Those showings helped him land a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 22.
From a tactical view, Smart’s value centers on on-ball defense, passing from the wing, and closing game situations. His ability to guard multiple positions matches the Lakers’ need for versatile defenders around LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
Beverley emphasized that Smart still plays with edge and that edge often elevates teammates. That type of intangibles-driven impact matters in playoff matchups where defensive stops and late possessions decide outcomes.
