Domantas Sabonis has a strong bond with Sacramento’s new head coach Doug Christie, who was promoted from interim to full-time head coach this summer. Reflecting on their relationship, Sabonis praised Christie’s dedication and work ethic.
“He was in there with me those three summers, every day in the gym,” he recalled with a smile. “I’ve seen how hard he works, so for him to have this opportunity, the fans love him, he’s one of us here. So I think it’s going to be very exciting.”
The big man believes Christie’s promotion will energize the team and help establish a culture that resonates with the Kings’ community.
On the player front, he addressed the recent trade that sent fellow Lithuanian big man Jonas Valanciunas to the Denver Nuggets.
Though saddened by losing a friend and teammate, Sabonis understands the business side of basketball and is supportive of Valanciunas’ move to a contender.
“We know where all these decisions come from. It’s sad to see a friend leave, but at the same time, you understand. I’m happy for him; he’s with the Nuggets now, the top team in the West, and all he wants to do is win. I know he’s happy,” Sabonis said.
