Baskonia has announced the departure of head coach Pablo Laso and confirmed the hiring of Paolo Galbiati on a two-year deal through 2027.
The move comes after a disappointing 2024–25 EuroLeague campaign in which the Spanish club finished 14th with a 14–20 record, missing both the playoffs and the play-in tournament.
Laso, who took over last summer, oversaw a season of underwhelming results despite high expectations when he arrived from Bayern Munich. Baskonia thanked the veteran coach for his commitment and professionalism, wishing him success in future endeavors.
Galbiati joins from Italy’s Aquila Basket Trento, where he guided the team to a fourth-place finish in the 2024–25 Serie A standings. The 40-year-old Milan native is known for his modern basketball philosophy and player development focus.
Baskonia highlighted Galbiati’s international experience, including time with the Italian national team, as a key factor in his appointment. He becomes the latest coach to take the reins at the Buesa Arena, tasked with leading the club back into EuroLeague contention.
Galbiati’s tactical flexibility and emphasis on growth align with the Basque club’s new direction. His arrival marks a strategic reset after an inconsistent season marked by roster instability and stretches of offensive inefficiency.
Baskonia has struggled to maintain continuity on the bench in recent years. Galbiati will be the fourth full-time head coach in as many seasons.
