Despite having just two years of NBA experience under his belt, Mavericks center Dereck Lively II is already stepping into a leadership role by mentoring top draft pick Cooper Flagg, according to Jake Rogers of the Dallas Hoops Journal.

Their connection runs deeper than the professional level, as both players share a common background – they were one-and-done athletes at Duke University.

Lively reflected on their relationship, saying, “I’ve probably known him for a couple of years now, at least two or three. He’s always been the same smiling, joking kid. I’m glad he’s been able to stay grounded, not letting the spotlight overwhelm him. Whether he’s in the gym or hanging out at the house, he’s always just being Coop.”

The rookie has kept a natural and calm attitude even with the pressure of being a highly ranked prospect.

Since the draft, Lively has made it a point to stay in close contact with Flagg, helping him adjust to the professional environment.

“I’m making sure he feels as comfortable as possible, giving him any little detail or advice. I remember how frightened I was at 19. He’s only 18,” Lively said, revealing the empathy and support he offers as Flagg begins his NBA journey.
