According to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, it’s unlikely that signing veteran free agent guard Russell Westbrook would be a practical move for the Miami Heat.
Winderman suggests that Westbrook is probably more inclined to join a team with a clearer and more immediate path to championship contention, something the Heat may not be able to guarantee at this stage.
Additionally, the financial implications of adding any free agent at this point in the offseason are significant for Miami.
The team is already navigating a tight salary cap situation and facing potential luxury tax penalties, which further complicates any roster additions.
Even if the Heat were to pursue Westbrook, his role on the team would likely be limited.
Winderman points out that he would probably have to settle for being the fourth option in the guard rotation, behind established players like Tyler Herro, recently acquired Norman Powell, and defensive-minded guard Davion Mitchell.
Given Westbrook’s history as a high-usage player and former MVP, such a reduced role may not be appealing to him.
