Richard Jefferson explains that he would pick Karl Malone over Charles Barkley largely because of Malone’s unwavering professionalism and disciplined approach to the game.
Jefferson highlights that when comparing the two, Malone consistently maintained peak physical condition, trained for up to eight hours a day, and approached basketball with a serious, no-nonsense mindset.
He played at an elite level for 19 seasons and finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer. Jefferson believes that if Malone’s body had held up a bit longer, he likely would have become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
In contrast, the 2016 NBA champion points out that during Barkley’s early years in Philadelphia, he struggled with conditioning and was known for his off-court partying.
While Jefferson makes it clear that he’s not attacking Barkley personally, he notes that Barkley embraced a rebellious persona and famously declared that he wasn’t a role model.
Jefferson acknowledges Barkley’s greatness but ultimately gives the edge to Malone, valuing the relentless professionalism and physical discipline that defined his career.
