The Knicks are continuing to build their coaching staff under new head coach Mike Brown, with Lakers assistant Greg St. Jean and Grizzlies assistant Patrick Mutombo among potential candidates, sources tell Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.
They’re keeping several coaches from Tom Thibodeau’s team, including Rick Brunson and Maurice Cheeks, while adding player development assistants Charles Allen and Riccardo Fois, who worked with Brown in Sacramento.
Brendan O’Connor, longtime Clippers assistant, is expected to join as defensive coordinator.
The Knicks are still searching for an offensive-focused assistant. They’ve shown interest in James Borrego, Jay Triano, and Pablo Prigioni, but haven’t been allowed to interview Borrego or Triano, and Prigioni chose to stay in Minnesota.
St. Jean has coached with the Kings, Lakers, Mavericks, and Suns, returning to the Lakers in 2024 under J.J. Redick.
Mutombo played professionally overseas, then coached with several NBA teams and was head coach of the Raptors 905 G League team before joining the Grizzlies this season.
It’s unclear if the Knicks will formally pursue either St. Jean or Mutombo or have requested interviews with them.
