Luka Doncic officially committed to the Los Angeles Lakers long-term, calling the decision “an honor” during a press conference alongside Lakers GM Rob Pelinka.
Six months after being traded to Los Angeles, Doncic said the choice to re-sign came naturally once he experienced the environment within the franchise.
“Even later on when I started playing, I wanted to be here,” Doncic told reporters. “This is an amazing organization. We have trust in each other, so I decided pretty quick.”
Pelinka opened the session by emphasizing the magnitude of Doncic’s extension, calling the All-NBA guard “the best young basketball player in the universe” and labeling the move a “monumental moment in Lakers history.”
Doncic was asked what it felt like to be part of a franchise with such championship pedigree. “It’s an honor,” he said. “Many great players played here, so obviously, I want to add one more up there.”
He also acknowledged the emotional impact of his first game at Crypto.com Arena in Lakers purple and gold. “The way the fans and the team received me, it was unbelievable. In that moment, I felt something different,” Doncic said.
Beyond his on-court commitment, Doncic announced a $5 million pledge to support youth athletes globally, saying he felt compelled to give back after how warmly he was welcomed in Los Angeles.
Asked how he’s changed physically and mentally this offseason, Doncic credited a “fresh start,” revealing he took a full month off from basketball before refocusing. “Just doing other things… I think that’s going to help the most,” he said, highlighting improved conditioning and defensive focus.
Pelinka confirmed Doncic played a key role in the Lakers’ offseason moves, including the additions of DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart. “We feel like getting DeAndre was huge,” Pelinka said. “And being able to add Marcus—defensive player of the year—not only helps us defensively but puts the league on notice.”
Doncic admitted recruiting wasn’t always something he enjoyed earlier in his career, but saw the value this summer. “To build a team to win the championship… I play against them before, never with them. Now I’m happy they’re on my team.”
Despite a first-round exit last season, Doncic believes the roster is ready to compete. “We have what we need. We’re going to go for it,” he said.
With a full offseason under his belt and preseason ahead, Doncic is confident in his next chapter. “Way better. I’m just really excited. I can’t wait to get started.”
