The Washington Wizards will retain their 2026 first-round draft pick only if it lands within the top eight selections. If the pick falls outside of that top-eight range, ownership of the pick will transfer to the New York Knicks.

However, as Josh Robbins from The Athletic explains, the Wizards aren’t strongly motivated to fully regain that pick.

This is because attempting to do so could require them to give up the valuable swap rights they currently hold on the Phoenix Suns’ 2026 first-round pick.

Essentially, the Wizards are weighing the benefits of reacquiring their own pick against the strategic advantage of keeping their rights to exchange picks with the Suns, and they don’t feel pressured to reclaim the pick outright if it means sacrificing those swap rights.
