Yossi Gozlan from The Third Apron points out that the Brooklyn Nets continue to possess a substantial amount of salary cap flexibility heading into the summer.
However, the team remains in a bit of a deadlock regarding contract negotiations with their restricted free agent guard, Cam Thomas.
Currently, when accounting for cap holds, the Nets have about $28.1 million in available salary cap space, according to Gozlan’s analysis.
While Brooklyn has reached agreements in principle with some of its free agents – specifically wing Ziaire Williams and center Day’Ron Sharpe – those deals have not been formally finalized yet.
Gozlan highlights that the delay in officially signing these players is partly because the Nets are exploring potential trade opportunities that would leverage their available cap space.
He goes on to explain the various options Brooklyn has at its disposal to retain one or both Williams and Sharpe, while also considering how coming to terms with Thomas on a new contract might introduce additional complexity to their financial situation.
It’s important to note that the Nets’ cap room will shrink as the season approaches, with a maximum of roughly $15.5 million available once the new season begins. This means the team will inevitably commit to more salary soon.
Exactly how Brooklyn will manage these contract dealings and maneuver through the salary cap remains uncertain at this point.
