A man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of former NBA forward Adreian Payne, as reported by Silas Morgan and Cristobal Reyes of The Orlando Sentinel.

Lawrence Alexander Dority, the accused, shot and killed Payne in May 2022.

Dority claimed that he believed Payne, who was 31 years old at the time, was reaching for a gun, and therefore he acted in self-defense.

However, an investigation conducted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Payne was not carrying any weapon and did not pose a threat to Dority at the time of the incident.

This finding contradicted Dority’s self-defense assertion and played a significant role in the case. Following the jury’s verdict, Dority is now scheduled to be sentenced on August 29.

Payne played in the NBA from 2014 to 2018 with the Hawks, Timberwolves, and Magic. Over 107 games, he averaged 4 points and 2.9 rebounds in about 13 minutes per game.

His rookie season was his best, scoring 6.7 points and grabbing 5.1 rebounds per game. After the NBA, he played professionally overseas.
