The Miami Heat will not be able to sign guard Dru Smith to another two-way contract, according to a report from Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.
Smith, who has played for the Heat across multiple stints since going undrafted in 2021, has already been on a two-way deal with Miami during three separate salary cap years. NBA rules restrict a team from signing a player to more than three two-way contracts across different cap years.
While the 27-year-old remains eligible for a two-way contract with any other franchise, Miami is now limited to offering him only a standard deal. The Heat currently have 14 players on standard contracts, leaving one open roster spot ahead of the 15-player regular-season limit.
Smith’s most recent stint with the Heat ended in December 2024 when he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. Prior to the injury, he had appeared in 14 games this season and averaged 6.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from three.
This was his third time signing a two-way deal with Miami, having previously done so in October 2022 and again in July 2023 before his contract was converted to a standard deal later that year.
Despite promising stretches during his time in Miami and with its G League affiliate Sioux Falls Skyforce, Smith’s career has been interrupted by multiple serious injuries, including an ACL tear in November 2023.
In total, Smith has played 38 NBA games across parts of three seasons with Miami and Brooklyn, averaging 4.5 points and 1.9 rebounds in 14.7 minutes per contest.
