FC Bayern Munich officially announced the signing of Canadian guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes for the upcoming season.
Rathan-Mayes joins Bayern after one year with Spanish champions Real Madrid, agreeing to a one-year deal with an option for a second season.
The 31-year-old shooting guard was the top scorer in the VTB United League two years ago, averaging 25.7 points per game. He also played five NBA games for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2017, scoring 5.8 points per contest.
Currently preparing for the season in Los Angeles, Rathan-Mayes expressed excitement about joining Bayern and praised head coach Gordon Herbert.
“I have been following what has been happening in Munich and want to be a part of it,” he said. “With Coach Herbert, I have been in close contact, so joining Bayern was an easy decision.”
Rathan-Mayes aims to prove himself as a high-level player who can contribute on both ends of the court. He describes himself as a dynamic playmaker who scores, passes, and plays tough defense.
After three seasons at Florida State University, where he averaged 12.4 points, Rathan-Mayes began his professional career in the NBA G League. He has played in multiple countries, including Greece, Israel, Romania, Australia, Russia, and Spain.
Rathan-Mayes has represented Canada internationally and has history with coach Herbert from national team camps.
