The Drew League, a famed Los Angeles summer pro-am basketball circuit, continues to attract NBA stars and local talents alike. Commissioner Dino Smiley recently shared insights on past and potential future appearances by NBA players, including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Bronny James, in an interview with Mark Medina on RG.
Smiley highlighted DeMar DeRozan’s presence this summer, noting DeRozan hosted a kids’ clinic and attended games with his team. “His home and inspiration was Kobe,” Smiley said.
The league’s unique rules allow NBA players to join late in the season, which often results in surprise appearances. Smiley hinted that Bronny James might play soon, saying, “It would be interesting to see how he matches up with these guys.”
Reflecting on Kobe Bryant’s 2011 lockout appearance, Smiley described the unforgettable atmosphere: “When he came out on the floor, the crowd started screaming. That gave me chills.” Kobe’s game-winner over James Harden remains a historic moment in the league’s 52-year history.
LeBron James’ visit in 2022 drew large crowds and solidified his connection with LA fans. Smiley recalled how LeBron stayed after the game, taking selfies with fans and blending seamlessly with the community. “LeBron didn’t disappoint us at all,” he said.
Smiley also recalled Kevin Durant’s low-key arrival during the 2011 lockout, praising his enthusiasm and impact on the league. Baron Davis’s involvement added to the league’s star power, with LeBron joining the Drew League in a surprise cameo that summer.
DeMar DeRozan is regarded as “the face of the Drew League” today, thanks to his ongoing support and accessibility to fans and players. Smiley contrasted Harden’s early contributions with his recent absence, noting DeRozan’s continued commitment to the community.
