The Boston Celtics have waived guard JD Davison, the team announced on Twitter.

Although Boston picked up his 2025/26 team option in June, Davison’s $2.27 million salary was fully non-guaranteed, so releasing him doesn’t impact the team’s salary cap.

As noted by Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, waiving the player helps the Celtics get below the second tax apron, giving them more flexibility for potential trades.

Davison, the 53rd overall pick in the 2022 draft out of Alabama, spent most of the past three seasons on a two-way deal with Boston. He was converted to a standard multiyear contract near the end of the 2024/25 season.

While he saw limited action in the NBA – just 36 total appearances over three years – Davison excelled in the G League.

He won MVP honors last season with the Maine Celtics, averaging 25.6 points, 7.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game over 45 games, while shooting 48.2% from the field.

With this move, the Celtics now have a full roster of 15 standard contract players.
