The Boston Celtics are promoting guard JD Davison from his two-way contract to a standard NBA deal, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The new agreement is a two-year contract, and since Boston had an open spot on its 15-man roster, no corresponding roster move was necessary to finalize the signing.
Davison was selected by the Celtics in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. Over the past three seasons, he’s primarily developed in the G League while spending time on a two-way contract.
He’s played sparingly in the NBA, appearing in 35 games for Boston and averaging 1.7 points in 5.2 minutes per game.
However, Davison has made a strong impression in the G League, where he’s been a standout performer. Across 133 regular-season games, he has averaged 20.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 8.0 assists.
This season, he took a major leap, posting 25.6 points per game and earning G League MVP honors for his efforts.
With his conversion to a standard contract, Davison is now eligible to participate in the NBA Playoffs, giving the Celtics added depth at the guard position.
While the exact terms of his new deal haven’t been disclosed, the contract may include little or no guaranteed money for next season.
That’s a common structure for late-season conversions, allowing contending teams to evaluate young players more closely during the playoffs and into the offseason.
Had Boston not converted his deal, Davison would have become a restricted free agent this summer. Now, the Celtics retain more control over his future.
However, due to the March deadline for signing new two-way players, Boston cannot fill Davison’s vacated two-way slot.
The team’s remaining two-way players are Drew Peterson and Miles Norris, with Norris signed to a two-year two-way contract.
