The Phoenix Suns have reached an agreement with guard Jared Butler on a one-year contract, according to his agents Mark Bartelstein and Kieran Piller of Priority Sports, who informed ESPN’s Shams Charania (Twitter link).
Butler, 24, became a free agent in late June after the Philadelphia 76ers declined their team option on his $2.35 million salary for the 2025–26 season. The move allowed Butler to explore opportunities on the open market following a promising stint in Philadelphia.
He was originally acquired by the Sixers from the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline and made a strong impression down the stretch. Just one week after joining Philadelphia, the Sixers rewarded him by converting his two-way contract into a standard NBA deal.
In 28 games with the Sixers – many of which came as the team dealt with key injuries – Butler stepped up in an expanded role.
He averaged a career-best 11.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, starting in 17 contests and showing improved efficiency with shooting splits of 42.6% from the field, 35.2% from beyond the arc, and 87.0% from the free-throw line.
Over the course of the full 2023–24 season, Butler appeared in 60 games across two teams, showcasing his ability to contribute at the NBA level when given consistent minutes.
A second-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft (40th overall), Butler began his career with the Utah Jazz and later had a brief stint with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He joined the Wizards on a two-way contract in 2023 before being dealt to Philadelphia.
By bringing in Butler, the Suns continue to strengthen their backcourt depth as they prepare for the upcoming season. This signing comes on the heels of another recent move: Phoenix claimed former Lakers guard Jordan Goodwin off waivers, further bolstering their guard rotation.
Once both Butler’s signing and Goodwin’s acquisition are finalized, the Suns will have a full roster, with all 15 standard contract slots occupied and all three two-way contract positions filled.
