Free agent shooting guard Colby Jones is expected to join the Detroit Pistons on a two-way contract, according to information shared by Shams Charania of ESPN (via Twitter).
The 23-year-old guard showed promise during the latter part of the 2023–24 season while playing for the Washington Wizards. He joined Washington as part of a three-team deal at the trade deadline, having originally been with the Sacramento Kings.
Throughout 15 games with the Wizards, Jones made a solid impact, averaging 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
He played nearly 26 minutes per contest and recorded shooting splits of 46.6% from the field, 30.8% from three-point range, and 65.7% from the free-throw line.
Following his stint in Washington, Jones was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in June. However, the Thunder opted not to keep him on the roster and promptly waived him, declining his non-guaranteed $2.22 million salary for the upcoming season.
Jones entered the NBA as a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, selected 34th overall by the Kings. Up to this point, he has been on standard NBA contracts, making this his first experience under a two-way deal.
The Pistons currently have an open spot available among their three allotted two-way contract slots, so they will not need to release or waive another player to bring Jones aboard.
The team’s other two-way players are Ron Harper Jr. and Tolu Smith.
