The Orlando Magic have decided to release guard Ethan Thompson from his two-way contract, the team’s public relations department announced via social media.
Thompson originally joined the Magic in February on a two-way deal but never saw any action at the NBA level during his stint with the franchise.
Despite not cracking the main roster’s rotation, he was an active contributor for Orlando’s G League affiliate, the Osceola Magic.
In 31 games for Osceola, the 6-foot-5 guard put up solid numbers, averaging 18.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.0 steal per game while logging 34.2 minutes per contest.
At 26 years old, Thompson is no stranger to the G League. Over the course of his professional career, he has played in 127 G League games. That includes 33 appearances last season with the Mexico City Capitanes during the 2023–24 campaign.
After going undrafted in 2021 out of Oregon State, Thompson spent time in training camps with the Chicago Bulls in back-to-back years but was waived before the regular season both times.
He also signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Magic prior to last season but was again waived during the preseason.
Earlier this week, the Magic filled one of their three available two-way slots by signing center Orlando Robinson.
By parting ways with Thompson, the team now has two vacant two-way contract spots available – giving them some flexibility to potentially add young talent or depth as the offseason continues.
