Kevon Looney’s decision to leave the Golden State Warriors was influenced significantly by his diminishing playing time, particularly during critical moments like the playoffs, as highlighted by Tristi Rodriguez from NBC Sports Bay Area.
Looney reflected on his experience during an interview on the Warriors Plus/Minus podcast, saying, “It felt like it was always anyone but me getting the minutes. There wasn’t a single defining moment – it was more of a constant pattern.
“Even this past season, during the playoffs, we were facing Steven Adams, and that’s exactly the kind of matchup I’m built for. Yet, I wasn’t really given the opportunity to play my role and contribute the way I know I can.”
He went on to express his frustration after spending a decade with the franchise: “After proving myself in those initial four or five years, I believed I had earned my place. But after 10 years, it reaches a point where you think, either they trust in what I bring to the table, or they don’t.”
Looney acknowledged that the coaching decisions made by Steve Kerr were never meant to be personal, but he couldn’t help feeling that he was unfairly overlooked in Kerr’s pursuit of winning.
