Kevin Durant recently had minor thumb surgery after being traded to the Houston Rockets in a historic seven-team deal on July 6, 2025, according to NBA sources who spoke with PaperCity Magazine.
The procedure was not previously reported and is considered minor. A source told PaperCity that Rockets leadership “did not give it a second thought” after team doctors reviewed Durant’s x-rays.
Durant, 36, arrives in Houston after a tumultuous final season with the Phoenix Suns. He led the Suns in scoring with 26.6 points per game over 62 appearances, but several injuries — including calf, ankle, and ultimately another ankle sprain in March — sidelined him for critical stretches of the season.
The Suns finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs despite a strong start to the year, going just 3–17 in games Durant did not play.
The forward still achieved major milestones during the campaign, including reaching 30,000 career points on February 11 against the Memphis Grizzlies and joining LeBron James as the only players to score 40 points against all 30 NBA teams.
Durant’s thumb surgery reportedly happened quietly after the season and does not appear to jeopardize his availability for training camp with the Rockets.
Throughout his 17-season career, Durant has been named to 15 All-Star Games, won two NBA championships, and captured four scoring titles. His regular-season career averages stand at 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game over 1,123 contests.
