Despite a record-setting year, Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young and the organization have not entered substantive extension discussions, according to Marc Spears on Sports Center.

Young, who is 26 and in the fourth year of a five-year, $215 million contract, has a player option for the final season. Spears noted that Young even skipped a Jordan Brand trip to Greece to be with the team in Las Vegas, signaling his commitment to Atlanta despite no ongoing talks.

“Trae has shown his commitment to Atlanta by actually turning down an opportunity to be with Jordan Brand in Greece… he went to Vegas to be with the team… but right now there’s not really any substantive talks in terms of an extension at the moment,” Spears reported.

Young delivered one of the most productive seasons of his career in 2024–25. He led the NBA in assists per game (11.6) and set a Hawks franchise record with 880 assists.

His season included several historic performances, such as three games with at least 20 points and 20 assists — a feat last matched by John Stockton in 1990. Young also became the first player ever to tally 30+ points, 20+ assists, and 5+ three-pointers in a single contest.

With one guaranteed year remaining and a player option beyond that, the Hawks face an important decision on whether to lock up their franchise point guard long-term.
