Victor Wembanyama has officially been cleared to return to basketball after recovering from a blood clot in his shoulder, the San Antonio Spurs star confirmed.

Speaking to L’Équipe, Wembanyama revealed the Spurs’ medical staff gave him the green light last Friday, ending nearly five months away from competition. “I’m officially cleared to return. It just happened — I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just a few hours ago (last Friday). Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again!” he said, according to a tweet by French journalist Maxime Aubit.

The 7-foot-4 forward had been sidelined since February 20, when doctors discovered deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. At the time of the diagnosis, Wembanyama was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-leading 3.8 blocks over 46 games.

Before his health setback, the 21-year-old was compiling a historic sophomore campaign. He became just the third player in NBA history to record multiple five-by-five games and scored a career-high 50 points in a win over the Wizards last November.

Wembanyama also delivered several record-breaking performances, including a Christmas Day debut of 42 points and 18 rebounds against the Knicks, and a December game where he posted 30 points and 10 blocks — the youngest player ever to achieve that feat.

His absence over the final months of the 2024–25 season left San Antonio short-handed, but the Spurs continued their rebuild while awaiting his return. Now cleared, Wembanyama is expected to resume basketball activities this summer in preparation for training camp.

The Spurs have yet to announce an official timetable for his on-court comeback or any plans for summer league appearances. However, Wembanyama’s statement signals he is eager to get back on the court and continue his trajectory as one of the league’s brightest young stars.
