Michael Porter Jr. is embracing a fresh start with the Brooklyn Nets, voicing confidence that his best basketball is still ahead.
“I just feel like I have more in my tank,” Porter said, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “Still, I don’t feel like I’ve reached my peak; and I’m excited to just grow my game, expand my gaming, explore my game, to see what I can do.”
The 27-year-old forward was traded to Brooklyn in exchange for Cameron Johnson and a 2032 first-round pick. His arrival marks a significant roster move as the Nets aim to reshape their core.
Porter acknowledged Denver’s success during his time there but admitted he felt limited in their offensive system. He credited Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray’s two-man game for driving team success but suggested it left fewer opportunities for him to evolve.
He also acknowledged the upcoming lifestyle change with a candid reflection on relocating.
“I always said New York was my least favorite NBA city,” Porter admitted, per Lewis. “Just because I grew up in the Midwest, where there’s so much space and no traffic. So it’ll be an adjustment. But I think it’ll end up being an amazing place for me.”
Porter averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game last season while shooting 50.4% from the field and 39.7% from beyond the arc.
However, his playoff production dipped to 9.1 points and 5.5 boards over 14 games.
