The New York Knicks’ coaching staff search under newly hired head coach Mike Brown has already hit a roadblock.

According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post, the Dallas Mavericks declined the Knicks’ request to interview veteran assistant coach Jay Triano for the role of associate head coach.

Triano, who was Mike Brown’s lead assistant and offensive coordinator during their time together in Sacramento, was considered a strong candidate for a top position on Brown’s new staff in New York.

However, the Mavericks, who only hired Triano a month ago, weren’t willing to part ways with him so soon.

Dallas reportedly views Triano as a valuable addition to their revamped bench and were unwilling to let another team lure him away before he had even coached a game in his new role.

Given his experience and reputation as a creative offensive mind, it’s understandable why the Knicks targeted him – and why the Mavericks were quick to say no.

Bondy also noted that this isn’t the first time the Mavericks have turned down the Knicks.

Prior to Brown’s hiring, New York had also requested permission to speak with Dallas head coach Jason Kidd, a move that was similarly denied.

The Knicks now continue their search for a top assistant to help Brown implement his vision, but it’s clear they’re facing some resistance from around the league – particularly when it comes to prying away respected coaching talent from rival teams.
