Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos confirmed the club’s interest in Jonas Valanciunas during an Instagram Live session, stating that both sides are eager to make a deal if circumstances allow.

“We want to sign him, he wants to join us, if his team doesn’t say ‘yes’, what can we do?” Giannakopoulos said, addressing the ongoing negotiations as the Denver Nuggets move closer to finalizing a trade for the veteran center.

Valanciunas, 33, met with Panathinaikos officials in Athens last weekend to discuss a proposed three-year contract reportedly worth around €12 million. The Greek powerhouse is seeking to add him as the centerpiece of its frontcourt to contend for the EuroLeague title.

However, his immediate future remains tied to the NBA, with Denver expected to acquire him from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for forward Dario Saric. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Nuggets plan to complete the trade by Sunday, giving them contractual control of the Lithuanian big man.

Denver head coach David Adelman has already outlined a vision for Valanciunas as a skilled backup to Nikola Jokic. Speaking to reporters, Adelman called him a “point center,” praising his ability to play in a five-out offense and facilitate from the elbow without relying on a traditional point guard.

Valanciunas remains under contract through at least the 2025–26 season with a guaranteed $10.4 million salary. Denver has not yet guaranteed his 2026–27 salary, leaving a slim possibility for a buyout or release if both sides agree.

The 12-year NBA veteran averaged 8.7 points and 7.0 rebounds last season, splitting time between the Washington Wizards and Kings primarily as a reserve. Despite reduced minutes, he continues to be valued for his rebounding, interior scoring, and experience.

Panathinaikos is pushing hard to convince him to choose a starring role in Europe over a bench role in Denver. The club finished third in the EuroLeague regular season and sees Valanciunas as a key figure in its quest for the continental title.

While the Nuggets hold the final say, Giannakopoulos’ comments reflect confidence that an agreement can eventually be reached. The trade between Denver and Sacramento is expected to conclude soon, after which Valanciunas will decide whether to stay in the NBA or move to Athens.
