Mychal Thompson, the former Lakers big man and longtime radio analyst, believes that fellow Bahamian Deandre Ayton could be the ideal center for the Los Angeles Lakers, he shared with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda.
Thompson sees great potential in Ayton’s game and thinks he could perfectly fit the Lakers’ needs at the center position.
However, Thompson is also candid about the player’s career so far, admitting that the 26-year-old has “underachieved” compared to his potential.
He points out that it’s ultimately on Ayton to demonstrate he can perform at a high level consistently, night in and night out.
Reflecting on the skepticism from fans and analysts, Thompson said, “They’re not wrong to say, ‘Show me.’” He understands the doubts given Ayton has only “shown glimpses of how good he can be.”
According to Thompson, while the big man undeniably possesses All-Star talent, he still needs to prove he can sustain that level across a full 82-game season.
“So I don’t blame people for being a little skeptical about him,” Thompson added. “But I have faith in him. I know he’s going to prove to everybody how good he is.”
